Britney Holthouser

Animating Principle is owned and operated by Britney Holthouser. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (license #102221), Britney spent years developing the concept and services offered by Animating Principle. Through personal hardship, education, and experience, Britney formed the foundation of the genuine, transparent, and transformative experience offered at Animating Principle. Britney’s background is in Existential Therapy, a theory based on “the philosophical belief that human beings are alone in the world, and that this aloneness can only be overcome by creating one’s own meaning, and exercising one’s freedom to choose” (Psychology Today, 2019). It is this belief that drives Animating Principle’s mission.

Through Animating Principle, Britney provides modern therapy, mentoring, coaching, and consulting services to individuals, parents, families, and professionals. Britney works collaboratively with children, adolescents, and adults to develop an individualized plan focused on client goals and unique needs of each individual. Britney works with a wide variety of challenges and enhancement opportunities, and specializes in helping others reach their full potential and find purpose and meaning in life. Britney uses her training in multiple therapeutic modalities to form an Integrative approach with a foundation rooted in Existential, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) However, Britney tailors treatment 100 percent to each individual and can pull from a variety of other approaches when needed, such as Mindfulness-Based, Humanistic, Solution-Focused, Psychodynamic, Art, Play Therapy and more! Britney firmly believes that you are the expert of your own life. She will work with you to clarify your thoughts and feelings, identify your choices, increase accountability, gain awareness, challenge and replace negative thought and behavior patterns, and increase value-committed actions to uncover meaning, increase fulfillment and purpose, and maximize potential.

Britney holds two Master’s Degrees; a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Master of Advanced Study in Criminology, Law and Society. She is published in the area of neurology of mindfulness and was awarded several research awards for her work in the areas of the negative impact of solitary confinement on prisoners in the justice system, as well as the influence of mindfulness on personality disorders. From there, she worked at a private practice for 6 years in La Canada before starting her own practice, Animating Principle, in Montrose over 4 years ago. More recently, Britney and her husband Sean opened their second location, Animating Principle’s Workshop in Montrose, to serve a wider range of the community with individual, group, and art therapy services for all ages.
